Unitatis Redintegratio:

Mendukung PEMULIHAN KESATUAN antara segenap umat kristen merupakan salah satu maksud utama Konsili Ekumenis Vatikan II. (1)

Cardinal Walter Kasper, the Prefect of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity (2001 - 2010):

"The Second Vatican Council created an atmosphere leading the Catholic Church to enter into the mainstream of modern ecumenism."

“Today we no longer understand ecumenism in the sense of a return, by which the others would ‘be converted’ and return to being ‘catholics.’ This was expressly abandoned by Vatican II.”

“The Catholic commitment to ecumenism is not based on wanting to draw all Christians into the Catholic fold, nor does it seek to create a new church, drawing on the best of each of the ecumenical partners.”

Paus Benediktus XVI:

“Following in the footsteps of my predecessors, in particular Paul VI and John Paul II, I feel intensely the need to affirm again the irreversible commitment, assumed by the Second Vatican Council and continued over the last years, thanks also to the action of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.”

In his speech to Protestants at World Youth Day 2005 (August 19), Pope Benedict XVI also explicitly denied the ecumenism of the return, stating: “And we now ask: What does it mean to restore the unity of all Christians? … this unity does not mean what could be called ‘ecumenism of the return’: that is, to deny and to reject one’s own faith history. In his book, Principles of Catholic Theology (pp. 197-198), Pope Benedict XVI further rejects calls for the collective conversion of Protestant churches to the Catholic faith, as “maximum solutions…. which offer no real hope for unity”.

Penekanan persatuan ekumenisme KVII ada pada proses DIALOG IMAN seperti yang dijelaskan dalam dokumen "Proclamation & Dialogue" (19 Mei 1991):

Dialogue can be understood in different ways. Firstly, at the purely human level, it means reciprocal communication, leading to a common goal or, at a deeper level, to interpersonal communion. Secondly, dialogue can be taken as an attitude of respect and friendship, which permeates or should permeate all those activities constituting the evangelizing mission of the Church. This can appropriately be called "the spirit of dialogue". Thirdly, in the context of religious plurality, dialogue means "all positive and constructive interreligious relations with individuals and communities of other faiths which are directed at mutual understanding and enrichment"(6), in obedience to truth and respect for freedom. It includes both witness and the exploration of respective religious convictions. It is in this third sense that the present document uses the term dialogue for one of the integral elements of the Church's evangelizing mission.

... jelaslah mengapa Takhta Apostolik tidak pernah mengizinkan umatnya untuk mengambil bagian dalam persekutuan non-Katolik. Karena persatuan umat Kristiani hanya dapat ditingkatkan dengan mempromosikan kembalinya ke satu-satunya Gereja Kristus yang sejati... (10)

Oleh karena itu, biarlah anak-anak yang terpisah itu mendekat ke Takhta Apostolik, yang didirikan di Kota tempat Petrus dan Paulus, Pangeran dari para Rasul, disucikan oleh darah mereka. Therefore the whole and entire Catholic doctrine is to be presented and explained: by no means is it permitted to pass over in silence or to veil in ambiguous terms the Catholic truth regarding the nature and way of justification, the constitution of the Church, the primacy of jurisdiction of the Roman Pontiff, and the only true union by the return of the dissidents to the one true Church of Christ. It should be made clear to them that, in returning to the Church, they will lose nothing of that good which by the grace of God has hitherto been implanted in them, but that it will rather be supplemented and completed by their return. However, one should not speak of this in such a way that they will imagine that in returning to the Church they are bringing to it something substantial which it has hitherto lacked. It will be necessary to say these things clearly and openly, first because it is the truth that they themselves are seeking, and moreover because outside the truth no true union can ever be attained.

Unitatis Redintegratio:

Maka Konsili suci mengundang segenap umat Katolik, untuk mengenali tanda-tanda zaman, dan secara aktif berperanserta dalam kegiatan ekumenis. Yang dimaksudkan dengan “Gerakan Ekumenis ialah: kegiatan-kegiatan dan usaha-usaha, yang – menanggapi bermacam-macam kebutuhan Gereja dan berbagai situasi – diadakan dan ditujukan untuk mendukung kesatuan umat kristen...(4)

Mortalium Animos:

Dengan demikian, jelaslah bahwa Takhta Apostolik tanpa kecuali tidak boleh ambil bagian dalam persekutuan mereka, juga tidak dibenarkan bagi umat Katolik untuk mendukung atau bekerja untuk usaha-usaha semacam itu; karena jika mereka melakukannya, mereka akan menyetujui kekristenan palsu, yang sangat asing bagi Gereja Kristus yang satu.
